WTMR: Part 11

Chapter 5, Part 4: New Adventure

The man cleaned her up more after sending the kids back to the base. He told them to fix the “cracks”, whatever those were.

Paper towels turned bright red from her blood sat in the sinks. She wondered if they’d be found at school tomorrow, before wondering if she’d even survive to tomorrow. It made her stomach curl and twist with knots.

The man tsked again, finally wrapping her arm securely with a bandage. “Those dang monsters are always after the weakest links.”

Evelynn’s heart sank as far as it could go, blood running ice cold. Weakest link? Her? Did he mean that? Yes, a voice seemed to whisper in her ear. Panicked, she looked around fast, shaking a little.

The man caught on, suspicious. “What, kid? You hearing voices again?”

“I, um…” Evelynn hesitates. “Yeah.” She finally says, sacrificing her comfort. “But please don’t tell the others,” she adds fast, almost too fast.

The man pressed his chapped lips together, staring at her hurt arm. “Why you askin’ me that, kiddo?”

“Um,” Evelynn was at a loss for words. Why? Why not? She wanted to have friends for once. Please, anyone, just be her friend, and she didn’t want to lose this chance for anything. She would just rather live to see the friendship than risk being completely silent and dying alone here.

The man looked up finally, his expression unreadable. After a long silent moment, he gave her head a single, unintentionally rough pat. “It’s okay, kid. Just stick nearer to me. No one needs to know.”

Warmth floods her veins. The light in the room seemed ever so slightly brighter as a real smile tugged at the corners of her lips.

He laughs at her smile. “Little gremlins. Now, come on, we gotta find a new base. Your little group was compromised before when you went missing.”

The knots came back. She hopped off the bathroom counter. “What?”

“We have a journey to make now,” The man continued, voice low and grim. “I hope you kids have what it takes.”
